Mendocino Coast Writers’ Conference 2023

Happy to share I’ll be the short fiction instructor for the 2023 Mendocino Coast Writers Conference. This insanely gorgeous part of California is very close to my heart, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to bring my love of writing, teaching, and the Northern California coast all together in three-day workshop.

Registration opens March 15. Grab a spot while you can.

There are wildly talented instructors leading all the workshops and it promises to be an incredible experience, including Ariel Gore, Nayomi Munaweera, Daniel B. Summerhill, Sarah McColl, Ploi Pirapokin, Muriel Leung and Carvell Wallace.

Literary Arts Class: Starting the Story (4 weeks) VIRTUAL

This 4 -week virtual short fiction workshop will focus on generating new work and simply getting words down on a page.  We will read excerpts, share just-written work aloud, and sometimes discuss assigned weekly readings together. We will investigate ways to unearth material together and share strategies for maintaining a regular writing practice. Participants will leave will many fragments and several starts for new work.

Literary Arts wants their classes to be accessible to everyone, regardless of income and background. They understand that their tuition structure can present obstacles for some people. The Access Program offers class registrations at a reduced rate. The access program for writing classes covers 60% of the class tuition. Most writing classes have at least one access spot available.

Please apply here for access rate tuition. Contact Susan Moore at susan@literary-arts.org if you have questions.

Six Week Short Story Intensive (August/September 2018)

Just like you asked for, here is the longer Short Story Intensive through Literary Arts.

After some student requests, the Short Story Intensive I’ve been teaching at Literary Arts has been expanded to a 6 week class, which means we’ll spend even more time discussing writing, readings and our own work.

Here is the info from the Literary Arts site:

Write a draft of a short story in six weeks. Class includes an emphasis on character, voice, and how to mine detail inside a scene. Class time will be spent on generating ideas for plot and character; participants will have the opportunity to get feedback on some of their writing and learn techniques for establishing a consistent writing practice so they can revise their draft once the class is done.

Literary Arts Writing Workshop: 3-Week Short Story Intensive

For three consecutive Wednesdays this winter, I’ll be teaching a Short Story Intensive workshop to a small batch of students.

Wednesday, February 22 – 6:00-9:00PM

Wednesday, March 1- 6:00-9:00PM

Wednesday, March 8- 6:00-9:00PM

We will discuss all elements of the short story, from creating ideas through character, detail, plot, point of view all the way through to revision, and the revision that happens after you think you’re done revising. The pain and the glory both.

Each student will leave with a new story and likely several starts for new work as well.

Description

The most successful works of memoir, whether books or essays, combine self-imagination, a bare naked heart and a fearless dose of honesty. This workshop will be structured around finding our way into this place. Read excerpts, write, share work, and discuss different methods of non-fiction storytelling. We will investigate ways to unearth material from our lives and learn constructive editing techniques. Our focus together will be generating new work—you’ll likely leave with several fragments and starts, and one longer piece to return to on your own.
