Join Human Reproductive Stories founder Heather Hawksford and author Margaret Malone for this powerful storytelling circle. We will share and witness each others’ stories about reproductive health experiences that have positively or negatively (or both?) impacted our lives, such as medical procedures, hormone therapy, birth, aging, etc. Have you had a hysterectomy? Are you in the throes of peri/menopause? Have you transitioned genders? What is currently on your mind about your reproductive system??
Stories will be audio recorded and posted anonymously on humanreproductivestories.com.
About the venue:
This event will convene at Literary Arts in the basement classroom. The basement is ADA accessible by elevator as well as the restrooms on the basement and ground floor levels. The elevator is located by the cafe and the staircase to the basement is down the hall from the cafe.
Join us on November 5th for a very special One Page Wednesday.
Prior to the reading and open mic, we will host an author Q&A and roundtable chat with local fiction author Margaret Malone. Questions about industry? Need a new perspective on an element of craft? This is your opportunity to bring all of those writerly questions you can’t seem to find the answers to. Afterwards, we will move into our regular One Page event with Margaret Malone as the featured reader. Bring a single page from a work in progress and sign up if you’d like a chance to share, or come and enjoy the reading and prepare to be inspired.
Author Q&A with Margaret: 5:30 to 6:15 p.m.
One Page Wednesday Reading & Open Mic: 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Join me to kick off Portland Book Fest week by gathering with other writers to start several new short stories together.
Starting the Story Writing Class
November 3, 2025
Monday, 5:00-8:00 p.m. (one session)
at Literary Arts, 716 SE Grand Ave Portland, OR 97214
Instructor: Margaret Malone
At this three-hour class, we will read the beginnings of short stories, discuss their effectiveness, tone, and structure, and discuss whether they encourage us to keep reading and why. Then, using what we noticed, each participant will generate several story starts of their own. Plan on leaving this short class with story beginnings, ideas, tools, and encouragement we can use to nurture new work.

I’m delighted to be moderating a conversation with Chris Stuck (GIVE MY LOVE TO THE SAVAGES) and Theodore C. Van Alst, Jr. (SACRED CITY) for the Book Festival this year. Their brand new story collections are sharp, devastating, and, incredibly, miraculously, also often funny.
Join us, why don’t you. Our discussion is titled INTERSECTIONS and will be at 1PM.
It’s on Saturday November 13th at the Portland Book Festival in the Miller Gallery of the Portland Art Museum.
